Each new employee is considered to be in an introductory period for the first 90 calendar days from date of hire. The purpose of this introductory period is to help supervisors and co-workers recognize and address each new employee’s orientation and training needs. Both during and after the introductory period, employees are employed on an at-will basis.

 

 

 

The employee is expected to communicate any training needs he/she recognizes to his/her preceptor or supervisor.

 

The members of the orientation team and/or supervisor will regularly assess the employee's progress and communicate this assessment to the employee. Field staff will be accompanied by the supervisor or preceptor on home visits intermittently during the first 60 days, in order to allow for identification of the need for changes in performance by the 90-day date.

 

Employees who are informed of deficiencies in their performance during the introductory period will be expected to improve their performance by the end of the introductory period.

 

 

At the end of the introductory period, the supervisor is responsible for notifying the new employee of his/her successful completion of the introductory period.

 

 

A new employee who successfully completes the introductory period is credited with length of service from the original date for purposes of pension vesting and benefit accrual.

 

 

A supervisor who has concerns about a new employee's ability to successfully complete the introductory period must contact Administrator at the earliest possible date for assistance in addressing performance concerns. Plans addressing performance concerns or other formal disciplinary action should be reviewed with Administrator before taking action. The disciplinary counseling may be accelerated during the introductory period and an employee

may be discharged without advance notice when appropriate and approved by Administrator.
